Porriņo by Susan

So we walked into Spain... we`re now in Porriņo which possibly wins the "Worst Town in Spain" award from the both of us. It is awful, very, very ugly and seriously rainy...

Apart from Tui, which looked very pretty and interesting, Spain has been fairly rubbish so far... Mum told us to stay in Tui and she may have been right! I think it will take us a while to get back into the Spanish siesta manana routine, when we walked into Tui this morning around 9am everything was shut, even the cathedral and certainly anywhere that might have served breakfast... we have been used to the Portugese serving us breakfast anytime from 7am but it seems as if the spanish are still asleep til around 10!!

The walking was terrible today, if youīre thinking of skipping a day out of this camino today would be the day! Once out of Tui there was a very long walk beside a road for ages, a brief bit of woodland past where San Telmo collapsed and died from fever then a 7km slog through industrial estate into Porriņo!

I think it would`ve just about been bearable, I think even Tim slightly saw the funny side for the first few smelly spanish factories but just as we headed into the industrial estate the heavens opened and it poured and poured and poured with good old galician rain! From the point where it started raining Tim completely lost his sense of humour and by the time we stopped in smoky industrial bar for lunch he was on his second beer of the day...

Apparently walking through 7km of foreign chemical factories in the pouring rain with lorries thundering past you showering you with nasty lorry backspray does not come under his definition of a "holiday" !!! Eh? What kind of holidays can he mean, surely walking along spanish roads with your feet hurting is just how life goes no?
Hmmm...

Anyway so here we are, collapsed in the ugliest town in Spain. Tim asked in a cafe if there was a tourist office here and the girl just laughed and laughed...

On a positive note a lovely girl in a pharmacy gave us loads of free lollipops (possibly looked like we needed them!) and apparently Newcastle donīt get relegated til tommorow so allīs good!

Hope it goes better from here on in... there canīt be that many more industrial estates between here and Santiago right...?

"industrial estates - hmm dunno - you ARE in Galicia ... the only nice bit nowadays seems to be Santiago . . .

AAAAH - nostalgic sigh - you should have seen it 40 years ago!"

"Keep Tim away from any news from the home/toon front. They appear to be helping the opposition by kicking balls into their own goal at the moment. We have the wretched thing on in every room in the house at the moment. Think I had better disappear off somewhere . . . gorgeous summer day here . . . you may not want to know that . . ."
